Dolly Parton's Legacy of Giving

Dolly Parton leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond her music. Throughout her life, the country music legend devoted significant time and resources to philanthropy, supporting childhood literacy, medical research, disaster relief and people in need.

One of Parton's best-known charitable efforts is Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, a book-gifting program she launched in 1995 in her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee. Inspired by her father, who could not read or write, Parton created the program to provide free books each month to children from birth to age 5, regardless of their family's income. The program eventually expanded throughout the United States and internationally.

Parton often emphasized the importance of early childhood literacy. “If you can read, you can self-educate yourself,” she told Good Morning America. The Library of Congress recognized the program with multiple literacy awards. In 2018, Parton donated the program's 100 millionth book to the Library of Congress and hosted a story time.

Her philanthropy also reached medical research. In 2020, Parton donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to support COVID-19 research. The resulting Dolly Parton COVID-19 Research Fund helped support early research connected to Moderna's vaccine. In 2022, she donated another $1 million to Vanderbilt to support pediatric infectious disease research, including work involving antibiotic resistance and infections in children with cancer.

Parton has also repeatedly helped people affected by natural disasters. After the devastating 2016 wildfires in East Tennessee, she established the My People Fund, providing families who lost their homes with $1,000 a month for six months.

Following Hurricane Helene in 2024, Parton again stepped forward, donating $1 million of her own money, along with another $1 million from her businesses, to relief efforts.

Her decades of charitable work earned her the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in 2022. For Parton, giving was deeply connected to her upbringing and her desire to improve people's lives.

Reflecting on her philanthropy, she said: “I'm just so proud to have been a part of anything that's good and that's making life a little better for people.”

Parton's legacy demonstrates how success can be transformed into something larger than personal achievement: an enduring commitment to helping others.
